I do not call myself an artist, why? You may ask, well I do not create art, but then again what is art? A painting, a piece of music, a sculpture a poem, a story, a video game…. this? Is this art? And what is “good” art? If I think a painting is ugly does it make that painting less of an art work? And what if I find this painting to be so ugly, so repulsive that I rather look at a dog crap, is the painting still art? And if so, is the dog crap art too? I mean I rather look at that instead of the painting? But then on the other hand I would not hang the crap on the wall…

And how is “good” art measured, is it the amount of time the artist spends on his work, is it how groundbreaking his work is? Is it how much we can discuss, interpret the work in different ways?

Or is it a matter of scale? How big it is, how much color is used, how long the song is, and so on… and if it is a matter of scale, is more better or is less more?

Or maybe it is a matter of popularity, the more that see/hear it the better, it seems to be like that with the music, at least if you measure how much money is being made, and how much publicity it gets. Or maybe it’s about popularity, but not how many that likes it but who that likes it? That there is a bunch of “arty” people that just this piece of art want to reach out to and get the just there attention, and if you’re going to fit in to this bunch, then you must like just that kind of art, no matter if its music or another kind of art. But this seems to apply for music, there is rockers and rappers, singers and clappers…

And why are we always trying to categorize art? This song is heavy metal.. or this is and anime. And if every piece of art has to have a label on it that tells us were to butt it, who decides what label it is suppose to have.. the artist himself maybe?

Most of you is probably  thinking “art is a matter of taste, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder ”, but why is it that some art seems to fit in so many people’s taste, and other artworks only is liked by a few, and is there a form or piece of art the none likes? And in that case is it still art?

And the thought just hit me, if this is art? Am I an artist now? Or is there another criterion that has to be achieved before you are an artist? Or do you have to be in a special way. Or do you have to have a motivation or a purpose with your art.
These questions have been in the back of my mind for a while now… and I think this is the best place to ask them.. so any answers anyone?

A very though provoking editorial. To me I find art extremely objective; it's meaning varies from person to person.

That's really interesting because there are a lot of things I wouldn't necessarily call art but some people do... and you are right that different forms of art get different responses and numbers of people who like them.

hmm the philosophy of art...
well my answer to the first question (in the last paragraph) is that anyone can be an artist if that is the way they wish to see themselves. Now they may not be great or even good in the population's eyes, though they still can get better. Some of the most expensive art is by dead people so if you art is not liked now it could always be in the future.

yeah.. Art philosophy cool topic to bring up on deviantart!

you call this philosophy? I am flatter :) :),
but than again how in an art prescriptive is better? but I guess that depends on what goal you got with your art, and I think that the biggest reason that art form dead folk is expensive is because they are dead and cant make any more art, but Thanks for commenting I really appreciate it :D.

Well yes they can't make art anymore if they are dead... *giggle*

And yes this is very philosophical because when you question the essence of a thing you do really bring up a lot of other questions about the human mind. To me this is a lot like some of the questions we were asked during my philosophy class.

This is a thought provoking piece, and based on MY personal definition of art, that would make you an artist. ^.-.^ Everyone is entitled to their opinion - that's what makes us unique human beings, afterall - but the question of "what exactly is art?" is something that everyone should stop and consider.

Personally, I can find art in just about anything, whether the creator intended for it to be or not. Beauty truely is in the eye of the beholder, but something does not have to be beautiful for it to be art, or to be in the very least artistic. If something causes you to think, to wonder "I wonder what they were thinking?" or "I would love to know how they managed to do that" or even just "WHAT?" then it should be considered a piece of art, no matter how popular it is. Some of the greatest "masters" never sold a single painting while they were alive, and look at them now!

Thank you for writing this out. :3 I find it fasinating when others ask questions that may or may not ever be answered. As ~Draconomicon said, this is a bit of art philosiphy, and something that everyone should consider before they dub the next popular piece "art."
